Potential RV Owner Question

The wife and I have been looking and looking at RVs for awhile. We thought a motor home would be what we wanted but after renting and living in one for a week we’ve decided a travel trailer will fit us better. We’ve looked at hundreds of models and floor plans and have narrowed it down to 2 both are Forest River Wildwood X-Lite models 171RBXL and 241QBXL. We aren’t newbies to camping but we are to RVing. Does anyone have experience with the Wildwood models I listed? One of the things we are interested in knowing other people’s opinion is the ‘murphy bed/sofa. Observations, likes, dislikes etc.
  • Does the bedding...blankets, bedspread, sheets and pillows stay together on the mattress when up and then down? If not a Murphy bed isn’t for me. PS no need to post twice.
  • We did not know if we wanted to pull one of these barns down the road or not. We came from a canoe and tent background. So we rented a TT the size we thought we wanted for a ten day jaunt in the Ozarks.

We learned a lot but mostly our 200 hp. motor with four speed transmission would not work well and it is very easy to exceed the tow vehicle's max cargo capacity with family and camp stuff, long before you exceed it's towing capacity.

Renting makes you a better informed buyer.

One doesn't have to own any trailer with a Murphy Bed to know that most offer very limited front pass through cargo storage vs those with a conventional front queen bed with HUGE front pass through storage, my own 19' Coachmen being an example.

  • I had a FR 24ft Mini Lite with murphy bed. The down side was low payload capacity, and our floor plan had the bed go down over the sofa. While the sofa was very comfortable when the bed was down could not use it and had to sit as the dinette.
  • Provided both are within your tow vehicle's capacity either one will have similar handling characteristics.
  • Part of the RV purchasing is priorities. Our goal was to tour the country after retirement. This involves multiple stops, over several weeks, driving city streets and country roads to find unique places and at times remaining hooked up for an overnight or short stay.

So we wanted, total access at all times (virtually no setup), a bed you could exit without crawling over your spouse, large bath, pantry, linen closet. These were our priorities for the type of RVing we do.

You can see that if your vacation style is parking at you favorite vacation spot for a week or so, your priorities might be different.

RVing is a big umbrella, from Yogi Bear with lots of kid things to wilderness boondocking. Your floor plan needs to match the things you intend to do.

    Good luck
  • We have the model inbetween the ones you are looking at.. Love the Murphy bed. Only thing I dont like is The cubbards under the closets. I thought I would like the access to the understorage that goes across under the bed.. I would rather have another shelf there. Also the closet Bars to hang your clothes should be about an inch or two farther back.. You have to shove the sleeves of you clothes in when you close the door..Other than those two minor issues we love it.. Love the murphy bed . I put a foam topper on tho the DH thought it was fine.. It does shut with the topper on but DH thinks puts too much strain on the pins that hold it up. So I flop the foam topper back past where the wall shelf is and fold it up.

I'm trying to picture both types of trailers . Why can't a TT have both a murphy bed and a good sized passthrough ?

The Murphy Bed structure takes up much of the space that would otherwise be available for a large pass through cargo compartment.
