Complete silence is the new standard. The bar has been raised.
Those looking for a truly peaceful camping experience can now have A/C without the noise.
Ok, now that I have scraped myself off the floor from the jolly laugh you gave me, I decided to put your solar/battery/inverter silence vs a generator to the test..
While I would agree that running A/C from solar/battery would be "quieter" on the OUTSIDE of your RV, I do not agree that it makes a difference when you are INSIDE the RV..
After all, you only need A/C when you are INSIDE the RV, if you are sitting OUTSIDE there is no "need" to be running the A/C, right?
So, the following are my observed DB readings..
Conditions setup –
Outside, mid August at mid day noise level floor is 52DB
Inside RV Noise level floor is 50DB
Inside RV with A/C on and compressor running 60DB
Gen running outside level at 10ft 75DB
At 21Ft (standard measuring distance) 68 DB
Inside measurement with gen running, no A/C 55DB
Inside measurement with gen running and A/C running 60DB
Notes-
Gen is open frame 4Kw Buffalo Tools brand non inverter head and Honda clone engine.
All tests, the gen is placed 10ft away from RV, pointing the loudest side towards the RV.
My RV, I have removed the standard 13.5K BTU RV roof mounted A/C and replaced with off the shelf window A/Cs mounted in cabinets. 10K BTU LG unit in rear cabinet, air is ducted and redirected to the ceiling and 6.5K BTU unit in front bedroom. This setup is considerably quieter than a standard RV roof mounted A/C.
Additional observations..
If I strained, I could just barely hear the gen lightly over the A/C noise.
If I sat at the big picture window (single pane) I could hear the gen a slightly better but keep in mind that the gen was placed 10ft away from that window.
If I had an "inverter" gen with 58DB-60DB at 21 ft I do not believe that I could have hear that gen with A/C running at that window.
I believe that if I was testing with standard RV roof mounted A/C it would be doubtful that I could have ever been able to slightly hear my gen.
Basically all of my tests were done with worst case situation for generator placement, placing the gen 20ft away or behind a short wall or object can substantially reduce any objectionable noise from the gen..
Camping in any "organized" campground or camping lands with multiple campers close to you, running a gen is the least of the noise you will encounter.. I have as of yet never found a organized campground to be stone dead quiet.. Always vehicles, adults, kids, and more running about all day long.
If camping out in the wilderness with no one around, who cares if you make some noise on a as needed basis.. You can easily mitigate a lot of the gen noise by a simple 50ft extension cord and a small three sided noise shelter..
Most Inverter gens are downright quiet, you have to be within 20ft of them to notice they are running and with DB ratings of 58DB-60DB at 21ft they are not all that loud over the background noise I observed in my test..
