Pre DEF Cummins 8.3 problems?

Just wondering if the pre DEF ISC 8.3 MH Cummins had problems with plugged emissions like the 2008-2010 pickups did?
What year did the ISC go to SCR with DEF?
Did the MPG go up between the pre SCR and SCR engines like the Ram Cummins 6.7?

  • ISC's where still around in 2012 anyway, but I see the 2015's now have the ISL engines with 450 HP and 1250 TQ

I've asked a moderator to move to Class A for better exposure. Agree the 03 and older CAPS system can be a problem. 04 and newer ISL have been fairly good engines.
  • oh man, the ISC's with the CAPS fuel system are a royal pain. That HPFP is very difficult to service. On our buses, they were so bad that when mileage was up and we had to re-power those vehicles, we just swapped-in ISL's with the commonrail XPS fuel injection system that Cummins uses. I thought the ISC's were largely retired in 2007 and Cummins only had the ISL from then on? Maybe that's just in the transit world and not so much the motorhome business.
  • We have two Case/IH cotton pickers with the 8.3 so not exactly what your asking for.

I would say whenever you have a DPF equipped diesel, ones with DEF are always going to operate more efficiently with less soot in the intake track.
