Prices for Diesel Fuel vs Gasoline

Recently, in Denver, I've been seeing diesel fuel for 20 cents a gallon less than gasoline. Is that the case in other parts of the country? Any explanation?

  • You can also find 469 pages of this in the General forum.
  • It usually has to do with heating fuel prices. In the summer (here) diesel is less, in the winter the cost of diesel goes way up. However, it's been several years that diesel has been hovering much closer in price to gasoline than it had in the past; significantly more than gas much of the time.
  • Here in Arizona, diesel is 30 cents a gallon cheaper than regular unleaded. I'm likin' it. :)
  • There's a refinery down in the mid west causing gas prices to spike (not sure if this effects diesel?).

Here in the NE diesel vs gas is neck and neck currently.
    Prices for both are down!
  • Yah, I remember waaay back, in the '60s Diesel was Always cheaper and the thought was, boy, when will cars be diesel... heheh, well we all know how that went.. diesel went higher than gas.

I just happen to start noticing it cheaper in Seattle, WA too... I guess "Gas Buddy" would have an overall idea of it. Guessing it's just a "Glitch" with summer ending/oil prices dropping etc.. but there's always hope eh?

    fun..
  • Right now in LA area diesel is about $1.10 cheaper than regular gas.

At one point it was $1.19 cheaper so I started driving my C4500 (12 MPG) daily to work and back. It was cheaper to drive it than my Toyota Avalon (25 MPG).
  • Diesel and gas were even in Anchorage several weeks about, but diesel is now a little more expensive.

  • True in the Sacramento California area. As for why, we will never know. Why is it that fuel can cost more where it is refined than where there are no refineries?

  • No, it is not. Here, for instance, diesel is still 35 cents a gallon more than gas.

However, some areas it is cheaper, and the reason is that there are a couple refineries that are shut down for repairs, and this is the time of year they make gasoline and not diesel/heating oil. So the gas supply is tight, but the diesel we're using was all made last winter and isn't affected by the current shutdowns.
  • Back in 1999, Diesel was always the same or much less than Regular. But it varies around the country just like prices vary.

Currently in SE OK, diesel is only 10c cheaper. Are there more diesel refineries and that brings the price down? Or is it Supply and Demand? Really hard to tell, since Premium is outrageous.
