It is a very common problem on the 48RE's, mine does it as well (sometimes). When you do find yourself having it bound up, just push up on the shifter, then gently pull down again. Don't get mad at it, just be easy and you will get it out of park like it was brand new.

Not a common problem with my 48re with over twice the mileage and a year older. Mine only does it if I am parked on a slop and don't set the parking brake first, but its not real bad.

A little more info would help here. If it is happening only when parked on an incline, then apply the parking brake before you put the truck in park. If it does this when the truck is sitting on flat ground then you most likely will need to look into the detente ball.

The only time I have ever experienced this was when the truck was parked on an incline with the trailer hooked up. Was told by dealer to use the parking brake and I have never had the issue again.

I'm not saying that there is not an issue with the detente ball wearing. But I would think a worn detente would cause the trans leaver to shift hard all the time. A steel ball sliding in an aluminum hole is not a good idea. But it's not like there is not plenty oil to lubricate it!

If it was the "brake interlock" you would not shift the truck out of park until it was fixed or bypassed.

I had the same thing happen in my 05 Ram, it was the valve body. It was replaced under warranty, and had no further issues.

I had 2 Dodges that did that and both trucks is was the shift interlock that was bad. If you get stuck like i did several times in my 2010, you can pull the rubber boot from around the shift lever and look inside the column and see a small white lever that can be pushed that will overide the interlock.

One of the things many with an auto never think of is the Parking Brake.

Us Manual users use it all the time!

I have also seen the brake switch cause this. The safety may not be letting you take it out of park. What are you doing to to get it out of park when this happens? Is it hard to pull out of park or does it just feel stuck?

It's mechanical linkage...mud/gravel jammed in linkage. I know driving oil field roads mud gets up on the linkage, once it dries have had issues getting out of park, gotta get under and dig the dried mud out. After clearing the mud... no issues.

If you place it in park and take foot of brake pedal truck can move and pressure is applied to park pawl.

Emergency brake on first before releasing brake pedal.
