Progressive Dynamics Inc Converter blowing battery fuse

2012/2013 Jayco Jay Flight owners, what size fuse do you have from your charger to your battery post?? The holder should be right off of the battery post. I've already blew 3 30 amp fuses and the 4th caught on fire melting the fuse holder.

My weekend camp trip is ruined again by a travel trailer. Now my previous 2008 Jayco Jay Flight 19BH used a 30 amp fuse and never blew it. It did have a different converter but I forget which one it had and what the converter 12VDC current output was.

The new 2012 converter says it's has 45 amp output from it's converter but I don't know what it's charging current output is either. I've looked on it's website everywhere but there's no charging current specification.

Of course no where has any ATC fuses or fuse holders. I was going to try a 30 amp I've been using then a 50 amp to see if it stopped blowing. I really wish they would state what the current output is when charging.

Has anyone ran into this issue?? Also what size ATC fuse is connected to your battery positive post?? As I said mine was only 30 amp and kept blowing it. The last fuse failed and caught fire.

Tonight I was suppose to be packing up for camping, waxing the truck mirrors for the new Cipa slip on mirrors and leaving tommorrow after work. Instead I spent the whole night inspecting and checking the wiring, and pulled out the converter and checked it as well. Actually I checked every inch of the wire except where it went into the underbelly and floor. I checked the wire for a short and it is completely open. There's absolute infinite resistance in the circuit.

Don't know where to go from here. I'm going to the dealer after work to get fuses and fuse holder. If that's not it, I have to get the camper in Saturday as I have a large trip next week for the family. I can't skip that one as it's to important.

These are the times I really regret having a travel trailer. When I tent camp, I have never missed a trip and I've missed way to many due to camper problems. If only the wife would tent camp. :)

Thanks everyone for your help.

    45amp converter = 50amp fuse minimum.

That's what I'm thinking as John Barca's post also brought this up.

I just don't understand why Jayco or their dealers would put undersized 30 amp fuses in. I bought both of my Jay Flights from different dealers yet they both had the same fuse and holder at the same location. That's what led me to believe this was done at Jayco.
  • It's not the reverse polarity fuses. It the positive line fuse coming off of the battery post.

It doesn't blow all the time, but it has blown 4 times now. It's only rated for 30 amps and the battery is dead. If the PDI does charge at it's full current output of 45 amps, that's what the problem is but both Jaycos I've had came with 30 amp battery post fuses.

    Thanks
  • The PDI has full current output available for charging the battery. It sounds like there's either a problem with the battery (shorted cell?) or the converter is bad.
If it's the converter you can leave the reverse polarity fuses out and just connect a battery charger to the battery. This should get you through the weekend.

Try this place for help. Purchased my last converter from them.

Did you just put the batteries in. Hooked up right?
  • Sounds to me like a bad situation.
We have had lots of different RV's and have not missed to many trips. Now having said that we have spent some time in garage parking lots waiting for repairs while we were travelling, but overall with everyday maintenance we have spent the last twenty years in an RV and all in all it works well.
the tent.....well we did get away and it the middle of a thunder storm in the middle of the night, the air matresses were floating. Have not had that problem in the rv.
