Propane heater

The Old Ball and Chain and myself are planning to run up to the Grand Canyon area this fall to spend a few days exploring and doing some dry camping.

Our Lance 835 TC isn't equipped with solar, and I don't have a generator yet. I plan on adding these things as money allows, but for now I am counting on a single deep cycle 12 volt battery and propane. I switched all the lights to LED to conserve electricity.

I am anticipating some chilly temps on the trip and plan to use the TC's propane heater. I know that the heater fan is going to use a lot of juice. I won't be in one place for more than two days, so I know the truck will charge up the battery between camping spots, but I'm not sure if that will suffice to keep the battery charged sufficiently to run the heater fan for two days at a time.

The battery is in good shape.

My question- Has anybody used a small propane heater that uses the small green propane cylinders to take off the morning chill inside of the TC?

I wouldn't go to sleep with it on or leave it unattended, just run it a few minutes to take the chill off.

Thanks for helping a newbie.

  • Yes, I was planning on running a Mr. Buddy while I was making coffee in the morning. This is going to be a pleasure/shakedown trip and should answer some of my questions about how the battery will perform, among other things.

If worse comes to worse, we have some warm Big Agnus sleeping bags!

    Thanks!
  • What size is your battery? That will have an impact on how long it will last.

I have a Mr. Buddy heater that I sometimes use. It should work fine for use as you describe. I also would not go to sleep with it on though. Many years ago I almost killed myself with a Coleman camp stove on a deer hunting trip.
