Disappointing, yes, but that is why they call it a "HALF TON" truck!
If you venture out into axle capacities, you can justify carrying a few hundred pounds more to yourself, but it's still not going to be enough to carry even the lightest TC with your stuff in it, AND tow any sort of trailer.
I don't care what you do, even the lightest campers end up pushing 1500lbs empty, and you can easily put another 300-500lbs of supplies and equipment in them.
The only way to get a camper down light enough is to use expensive exotic composite materials. I'm sure a 6.5' camper could be built out of carbon fiber honeycomb that only weighs a few hundred pounds, leaving you tight but manageable once loaded up and hitched to the trailer. However it would probably cost $100,000, and nobody would buy it.
YES, there are people who load their HALF TON truck up with 2500lbs of camper and trailer tongue, hit the road, and are perfectly happy with it.
