If you are looking for value, the 05/06 Ford 6.0 and 07-10 Ford 6.4 diesels are your best options. But be prepared to do about $1,500 of work on each one first. Other than that, the v10 is a solid choice.
To clarify this, the reason these particular trucks with these engines are a "value" is that they have a poor reputation. They don't bring much money because they are rather unreliable and expensive to repair. I think the $1,500 estimate is rather on the low side to fix all the problems with one of these engines, particularly the 6.0.
For my money I wouldn't buy a truck knowing it was problematic and knowing I was going to need to sink money into it before I got started.
