Puma by Palomino or Apex by Coachman

Hi All,
We are looking to buy our first trailer and have narrowed it down to two we really like. The first is the Puma by Palomino 31dbts. Its a big trailer with a huge bunkhouse for our two boys and our dog. Has pretty much everything we are looking for... but we also saw and Apex by Coachman 300BHS that we like as well. We are leaning toward the Puma but are looking for some feedback (good or bad) on both brands and any tips you may have related to either one.
Thanks

  • We purchased a 2011 Coachmen Catalina a few months ago and was really amazed how they hold their value. Not sure about the Puma but have really been impressed with our Coachmen so far.
  • Berkshire Hathaway/Warren Buffet = Forest River company, correct??
  • Thanks for the feedback! We are leaning toward the Puma since it really is the bunk house with the most room for the boys, and family who want to come with us. But the mold mildew resistant lightweight azdel on the apex is a huge consideration...
  • We have been fulltiming in a Puma 30RKSS in the Texas oil fields for 14 months as gate guards. A very harsh and unfriendly environment to be sure. We have also been offgrid that entire time. The Puma has performed flawlessly.
  • I realize weight may not be a consideration. However. IMOP the APEX has two features that put it ahead of the Puma. First is of course weight. the Puma comes dry at 8,137 Lbs. The APEX is dry at 5980 LBS. a difference of 2197 LB. However the Puma does have a much higher carrying capacity.

the other thing is that the Puma is ridged aluminum siding. The APEX is AZDEL covered with fiberglass. The APEX will be MUCH, MUCH easier to keep clean, and to clean after it is used. Easier to wax as well.
  • Hi guys! I should have said... we have a Chevy 2500 duramax diesel. With tow package. Plenty big enough to tow either.
  • They are both Brekshire Hathaway companies and Warren Buffett backs winners.

I know several people that have dumped their Thor Industries products and gone to Forest River and they all say that was the best decision they made on a camper.

If you have not done so, I would suggest that you go lurk around the forums for Puma-Apex-Forest River and see what the owners there are saying.
  • I like the Apex trailers. We looked at a few and really liked them. Please make sure you have an adequate tow vehicle to tow such a beast as you're looking at!
  • I have had a couple of Puma trailers and found them to be good buys. Pretty much entry level quality but with name brand hardware like air conditioners, water heaters, etc. Good floor plans, and shop around for good prices.
  • You're right, a big trailer. So before others ask, what are you towing with and the specs? It's always the next question. It's my understanding, which is not always 100% accurate, that both are now Forest River companies. Both our 23SS ROO hybrid and now our Rockwood 2604 have both been FR and no complaints. We've been pleased with the fit and finish of both. No issues.

Assuming your have plenty beefy enough tow vehicle and have allowed about 1000# wiggle room, that is one of those things that only you and your family can decide which one fits your needs the best. I don't recall any negative things with either brand. Happy Camping!
