Here's another true story from those thinking they are "avoiding risk".

Belize again, because the jungle is, without doubt, the most "infectious" environment we have on the planet.

We were taking an FST, (Field Surgical Team), out to a village named Crique Sarco deep in the jungle in South West Belize. We'd been in a couple of times in the previous two weeks to advertize the "event" so that those in the outlying areas would know to attend. We got there and, out of interest I followed the team around.

A man appeared with an old shirt tied around his right forearm that was clearly soaked in pus and gunk. Upon removal of the shirt we were presented with a wound caused by a machete that was around 8" long that was swollen and oozing green and brown pus. An accident caused when he and his brother were cutting and burning a new field from the jungle.

The medic cleaned it with water and antiseptic but it was still clearly well past such basic treatment. He gave the man a tiny pill, about 2mm, and three more informing him to take one daily for the next three days and return to Crique Sarco on the fourth day. I was a bit stunned and asked him what that tiny little pill was. He said it was Penicillin... I thought "That's funny, when I get a cold the Dr. gives me a bloody horse pill yet he gets half a grain of rice".

I questioned him and his response was "You've never seen Penicillin work properly have you? Come back with us in four days". I did. The man appeared as requested and his bandage was dirty and sweaty but showed no no sign of the infection that his first dressing had shown. The medic removed the bandage and we were presented with a wound that had almost no swelling, absolutely no pus and an orangish, crystalline crust neatly aligned along the wound. The change was almost frightening.

I asked the medic how I need 200+mg three times daily for a cold while this man needs 20mg of the same drug to clean a wound that was profoundly "rotten". He explained that everything we eat has been treated with Penicillin and it passes through the meat we eat, the fish we eat into us and that the bacteria we face in our "protected" lives are used to it. So we have to, literally, nuke them with the drug just to keep them at bay.

But the bacteria keep "learning" and their "immune system" keeps improving. This is why we are starting to see these "superbugs". They are the result of our own stupidity and fear.

We're making our own executioner... Stop cleaning religiously, pick up the dropped fork unless it landed in something clearly foul and feel free to sneeze in your hand and wipe the reside on the rear of your jeans and get on with life...

Like normal people do...




Yes, I'm aware a "cold" is a virus that can't be treated by Penicillin... I used it as an example...

I agree. And, I have some friends that are about to have a new baby in a few days. They are still looking forward to camping with it next spring. By taking their baby out into a less sterile environment they are allowing it to get used to a more diverse system and then it's body can build up resistance to more things.

Of course they will use common since and be slightly careful. But, it's better then setting in the house with it all summer afraid to take it outside for fear it might catch something.

Nothing wrong with a bit of caution. After all, medical errors kill more than a quarter million people every year in the United States and injure millions.

I often wonder how many people here live in a bubble or have ever been real camping

I wonder that myself often.The life styles of the members here is so different as well as the type of rving we do.Water skiing and swimming is a lifestyle here and just about everyone does it in the closest creek or lake.We regularly use boiled creek water for dishes and when it is hot,we put our lawn chair in the creek and dangle our feet to keep cool.Washing our face or hands in the creek and using sand as a soap is just the norm.

But putting creek water in the trailer water tank should be avoided at all cost period!

We take water but accidents happen and for those times you could be stranded,we use Sawyer water filters for that just in case moment.

I often wonder how many people here live in a bubble or have ever been real camping. I go to Ontario and spend 10 days at a time in the wilderness paddling, swimming, and drinking from the lakes there. We do filter our drinking water but as for the dishes, and swimming, we are "gasp" exposed to nature. Sometimes a beaver even swam by and said hello with a slap of a tail. I sure am grateful to have survived this reckless lifestyle.

I'm loving all the people who go on about "exposure to risk" yet they seem to have no bloody idea that the human immune system only works when it is exposed to "risk"...

Here's a couple of funny little stories, take them for what you will.

Many years ago I was serving in Belize - a jungle if you ever saw one. Rivers run almost black with sediment and contamination. Standing Orders stated that we may not swim in the Belize River that ran past camp and that if we even fell in it we were to visit the Station Medical Center immediately. We had access to a Gemini, a rope and some water skis and some of the lads would take it out to the lagoon and water ski. One day one of the lads who was quite good decided that he would ski all the way back up the river to camp. He nearly made it but a waterlogged log floating low in the water conspired to deny him his glory. He spent 6 days in the medical center violently sick.

A cut of the same river runs right through the center of Belize City. As it passes through, (or hopefully not nowadays), it would pick up the raw sewage of the city as it went. Quite close to the lagoon and right next to the City Market it runs under what was known as "The Swing Bridge", I don't recall if it ever "swung", but it was a commonly used bus stop for lads coming from camp to town and thus attracted the local urchins. For those of you that have traveled to third world countries you know about "urchins" the world over. They see white people - they see money and, the world over, they have their method to extract it from us. In downtown Belize City the schtick was to have you throw a quarter into the filthy black water for them to retrieve... They're amazing, they come up after 30 seconds or more with the quarter every time. I never saw one throw up or look sick... Ever...

Funny how they react utterly differently to another human isn't it? The only logical and sensible explanation is that their body has learned to protect them from the pathogens from it's exposure to them.

I can relate numerous examples of the foolishness of over-protecting and over-medicating everything but, if you haven't got the gist yet then you, ("you" as in any individual reading this), really never will...

As for the contaminate water on your skin thing. I swim in the local lakes. And, friends of mine eat the fish out of them. I live in the middle of industrialized agriculture. Our local lakes are brown year around. I'm not dead quite yet.

I will say in the late season around here you have to be careful with your pets. We are starting to get a lot of Blue Green Algae blooms. If you pets drink that water they die. After about the 4th of July I start leaving the pets home or, I'm very careful to keep them out of the water.
