- NC_HaulerExplorerAgain, maybe a regional thing? I've never seen the cab lights on a 1/2 ton truck unless they were put on after market...(again, just in area's I spoke of earlier)..Never saw them on a 3/4 ton, but knew sometimes you could order them...Every 1 ton dually I've owned since 2005 have had the lights on the cab...I wondered why and was told same thing as mentioned before, width of the vehicle. You also have the extra lights on the fenders of the dually, where as you don't have it on the SRW trucks...

If you pull a fifth wheel or travel trailer, the 3 center ID lamps and outer marker lamps are required as well.
Not in WV, TN, NC, SC and VA to name a few....I see them on 1 ton SRW and 1 ton Dually's, but only way I've seen them on a 3/4 ton truck is if they've been ordered that way or they're been put on as aftermarket. I knew it dealt with width of vehicle, but makes me wonder why they come on 1 ton SRW trucks if that's the case...(maybe more a regional thing?) - Fast_MoparExplorer

As far as I know, any vehicle with a body width of over 80" requires them. That's why the F150 Raptor and the Hummer H2 have them.
It was my understanding that width-based clearance light requirement applies to the Ford Raptor and the Hummer H1, not the Tahoe-based H2. But, I've been wrong before. - dodge_guyExplorer II

This does not explain why two identical trucks, same years, same model, same cab configuration, why one has them and one does not. Only difference is one is a 4x4 and the other is a 4x2.
The 3 center lights indicate a width of over 80" the 2 outer lights indicate the corners of the wider load.
There is also a height requirement IIRC, along with, you could special order them as an extra. Sometimes in the past, a camper special would have them also, as this would be required due to the overall width assuming a bed camper was installed.
For some, I can see this as bling, others of us, a requirement depending upon HOW we are using the truck and trailer.

Yes, they could be ordered as an option. Say you wanted to tow a TT and be in compliance with the law. Some trucks came with them automatically if you ordered a towing pkg.
Either way there is a reason and a law that requires them! Although it is seldom if ever enforced. - blt2skiModerator
