I'd don't worry about it much but if we're leaving for the day and I happen to think about it I do turn the water heater off, whether it's running on gas, electric, or both. I suppose some might consider it a potential safety issue but really it's as much as "because I can". I also usually turn it off overnight when we don't have any need for hot water, but again only if I remember. What I do try to remember is to make sure it's been on for awhile by the time my wife wants to shower ... cause if I don't I sure will hear about it! :o
