Propane heater

What size is your battery? That will have an impact on how long it will last.

I have a Mr. Buddy heater that I sometimes use. It should work fine for use as you describe. I also would not go to sleep with it on though. Many years ago I almost killed myself with a Coleman camp stove on a deer hunting trip.

Yes, I was planning on running a Mr. Buddy while I was making coffee in the morning. This is going to be a pleasure/shakedown trip and should answer some of my questions about how the battery will perform, among other things.

If worse comes to worse, we have some warm Big Agnus sleeping bags!

I believe the general consensus is if you are using the propane furnace and blower it will be one battery - one night...

We have not had good luck using the propane furnace as it is always way too hot for us in our OFF-ROAD POPUP camper and of course consumes our battery power big time to run the 5-6AMP very loud blower fan all night.

I don't know if I would use the catalytic type propane heaters or not in a close area like the Truck Camper. You would definitely have to open so vents somewhere to be safe which defeats the purpose of heating in the first place.

I use a MR BUDDY heater in my OFF-ROAD POPUP Camper and it sits right under the fantastic fan which is cracked open about an inch.

Alot of guys have had great luck with the CAT 5 type vented propane wall heater.

I also think the TRUCK CAMPER would be an ideal candidate for the HYDRONIC TYPE water heater unit much like this concept...



I am wanting to test out this concept using the hot water heater for heat source... A couple of guys have had great success doing this


The heat registers could also be the wall mounted base board panels


One full time RV'er on here actually has found in-floor mounted heat registers which sounds very promising for hydronic heat.

Personally, I question your battery lasting the night with the furnace on. I also question your truck recharging your battery between camping spots. You have a good start with the LEDs.

My suggestion is use the small propane heater. I have used the stove (burners and/or oven). There will be the nay Sayers, but it is no different than cooking and baking. I would not sleep with them on.

Easy for me to spend your money, but strongly suggest a Olympian Wave 3 Catalytic Safety Heater (about $209.49). I have had them for many years, and it is my primary heat in my current TC. They use only propane, and can be used as a portable heater.

I'm not familiar with a Cat 5 vented heater

I installed a PlatCat Vented heater in my camper... it is really good... I would never be without it. Sips propane and barely uses any electrical power.

I have used my heater SPARINGLY for several nights. Not during the day, and occasionally at nite. I ran a wire from the thermostat to a toggle switch in a cabinet next to the bed. that way i can turn the heat on when I go to bed and control it with thetoggle switch as we sleep instead of it being on all night. I have also used a Mr Buddy during the day and evening having a window vented slightly while awake.

Fall camping in the Grand Canyon should not require all night furnace use. I've camped/fished many a cold Fall & Winter nights that dip into the low 30's. Inside camper temp in the morning is high 50's. Nothing a good comforter doesn't handle. Flip on the heater in the morning before crawling out of the covers and the camper is warm in 10 minutes.

I added a second battery to my 835. I put the battery in the truck bed and connected it to the camper battery. I had the small 70 watt factory installed solar panel and it kept both batteries topped off. No problem running the furnace in the winter. enjoy the cool weather and turn the thermostat down at night.

I have run on one battery many nights without a problem when it is a cool night, cold is another thing.

If you are looking at just warming up your camper in the morning then you will be fine.

As far as a cat heater they work great and I carry one for back-up and when I know my batteries are getting low and I use it only when I am awake. DO open a couple windows and DO get a CO2 detector and have fun.

Get a warm comforter or sleeping bag and let the temp drop in the night. You should b fine then.
