Question about the older diesel's

My question about the older diesel's is mainly the 5.9 dodge and the ford 7.3, these are a lot louder than the newer diesel. Is there anyway to make them quieter without hurting performance. I mean the dodge sounds like a john deer tractor;)

  • Oh man, I have been searching for a way to quiet my 7.3 for years. Without adding soundproofing to the cab I think you are SOL. Good thing is all of that noise has given me over 300K miles of relatively pain free service.
  • Can only speak for 5.9 Yes, it is loud. Have 2001 and might have to upgrade when the time comes. But hasn't failed me yet. Most bullet proof engine out there I believe. So I'll put up with noise. Have thought about insulation on firewall or something but haven't done it yet since owning from 2005. I just turn up the tunes.
  • I have a buddy that owned an older 5.9 dually. He swore when he changed to Amsoil synthetic oil, his engine got quieter.
They are really loud when compared to the newer diesels.
  • I had both of those engines, AH the good old diesels , they sure screwed up trying to improve them.
  • That sound is pure beauty to some. Many guys are trying to find ways to make the new (whisper) diesels sound more like....well, like a diesel.

    Go figure.
