I have seen first hand the damage that can be done to a spring pack by bending it where it isn't designed.. Especially at such a sharp angle.
So engaging the overloads sooner is "A BAD Idea"?
Do you have pictures of your first hand sighting?
Was it Torklift Stableloads that would be in your picture?
Was it a Ford, Chevy, GMC, Dodge, RAM, Toyota, or other?
Inquiring minds would like to know.
Sorry no pics, this was all before the days of digital cameras and I have avoided such items since. I have seen it on Fords, Dodge's and Toyota's. A generic add-a-leaf can have the same effect, as can other devices that go between the springs to engage the overloads sooner.
It's not the engaging if the overload that is bad, it's the effect the engagement has on the main pack. The main pack is designed to lay flat on the overload. The bump stops would prevent the main pack from reaching the end of the overload and bending sharply. The stableloads induce that bend the the mfgr is preventing. Springs aren't designed to be turned into a W shape.
Again, why would torklift warranty the springs, that they didn't make, if damage wasn't possible. Like many things in the recreational world they are counting on campers being bought and not used, and are covering themselves for the folks that use the heavily..IMHO.
