The only difference between a 2003 Silverado 2500HD Diesel and a 2003 Silverado 3500HD Diesel SRW is the spring pack and tires.

No need for a new 1 ton. Springs and tires will be much cheaper.

The short bed will limit the size of the camper and you should be OK weight wise.
