Question on 2016 Power Stroke

I now have 1,500 miles on my new Ford Super Duty. I have noticed that about every 200 to 250 miles a message appears in the guage cluster indicating "cleaning exhaust filter". Immediatly the fuel consumption increases substantially. I reset a trip odometer once when this happened. It took 28 miles at 65 mph and indicated fuel economy during this time was 10.6 mpg. This is driving empty, not towing. Is it normal for this regeneration to occur so often and also to use that much fuel during the regen? My dealer says it is. Maybe that is why I can't get over 15 mpg of mostly empty freeway (except for a quad in the box)travel.

  • Sounds normal to me.

I see regens at 400-450 miles running empty on the highway.

It increases in frequency to 250-300 miles when I do a lot of city driving under 50.

This has been pretty consistent for the last 15k miles.

I think mine cleans the filter about once every 450 miles. I think it may have done it more often when it was new. What axle ratio do you have?
  • The 28 miles is what I thought to be a bit much, I have never seen it go near that long.
  • I have a 2016 with about 5500 miles. I would say that's normal from what I am seeing.
  • No, it is not normal unless you idle the engine excessively. You can check the idle hours in the message center. It is normal for the exhaust cleaning to run a few times when new, till the computer adjusts. If you are driving normally and not idleing excessively, you very well may have a problem.
