As Charles Kuralt said "Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything."
We do the old US highway system where ever possible, but we also have the luxury of being able to take our time. We're no longer rushing to get all of our recreation done in 2 or 3 weeks.
This summer we took US 2 from the Mackinac Straights to western North Dakota and could have kept going to Puget Sound if not for the fires in the west. Coming back east we use US50 US54 and US40 instead of the interstates. In some areas, the speed limit was 70, well above my normal running speed of 63. You have to slow down going through towns, but I like the break and seeing what the town motto is.
We have driven US2 from WA to MN and enjoyed the trip. It was not that much slower than taking I94. 60-65 mph is our typical travel speed and I plan for a 50 mph average which includes stops. Our return used I90 after we drove south from WI.
