RAM - 2013 vs Newer

The 2014 was the first year of the new 3-link front suspension and they got rid of the 5-link which was more prone to the "death wobble". The other big changes were in the 2500. In 2014, the 2500's received a coil rear suspension and the same frame as the DRW 3500. The air bag option also became available in 2014.

It might be worth your while to look at a few different websites like Turbodieselregister.com or dieseltruckresource.com and take a look at the threads in the 4th gen forums to get an idea on some of those model years (both are dodge/ram truck forums). I think the 13's had some issues (as they all do) not that they haven't been fixed through software fixes etc by now. 46k for a 13 does seem high to me. I bought my 17 3500 crewcab, srw, 4x4, bighorn with a couple additional options which msrp'd for a 2kish for 51k. The Laramie is the next step up in trim level from the bighorn so it surely went for more to begin with but still seems high. Obviously take a look at auto trader or the like to see what comparables in the used market looks like and for new comparisons are going for take a look at someplace like Dave Smith or Dennis Dillon Ram to get a good idea of what the new ones are going for they both have quite a selection (currently dave smith has over 800 2500 and 3500 trucks)and good prices (not that they cant be beat). IIRC Dennis Dillon has their internet price on the page whereas Dave Smith you have to email for the real price. Dennnis Dillon at the moment has some 3500 bighorns with diesel for sub 50k.

Death wobble (DW) isn't going to be an issue on that truck. The suspension was updated in 2010 and unless it has a ton of miles and BFG tires, DW is not an issue on any of them.
It is worth paying a premium price for a low mileage clean truck.

2013 2500 are the old frame. The 3500 got the new frame in 2013.

Each successive year other small improvement items have been added.

You should go price a new one. RAM's can be had for 10-11K off MSRP with a little leg work. Interest rates are lower on a new vehicles. Dealers should be very willing to put you in a left over 2017 right now.

BTW buy a 3500 over the 2500 if you are going to tow a 5th wheel.

New trucks are a better deal than a low mileage clean truck at premium price, if you make the effort to get a good deal.

That's entirely subjective.
To pay two or three thousand more for a used truck may keep the OP from spending $15K+ more on a new one. Plus, all dealers pay the same price for new vehicles. You have to compare their markups.
Just more information for the OP's decision process.

I'm looking for a SRW 3500.

BarryG20 - Bighorn trim is what I'd like to have as well. Looking for one with the 5th wheel prep, full console, Navigation and standard size bed. I really dislike the fold down console that converts to a third front seat. Have and use all the car finding apps like cars.com., auto trader, and Car Gurus. CarMax has some nice ones, but way overpriced. Looked at the dealerships you mentioned. Idaho is a bit out of my range so I haven't seen anything from them in my searches. Agree that the prices at Dennis Dillon are great, but then you have to add destination charge, and other dealer fees. I came close to a great deal in Orlando, and actually negotiated the dealer fee way down over the phone and was going the next day to purchase, but it was sold before I got to it. A lot of what I see is either white or black.

A lot of these places want big bucks for used - will keep looking at new as the year comes to a close.

Thanks for the info on the 2013's. I think I'll stick to 2014 and above.

You're correct, $46K is WAY too high, but I'm sure that's just their opening shot in the negotiation. Just to give you a rough benchmark, I I paid $47K plus fees for my new 2016 CTD Big Horn 2500. Granted, it's not a Laramie, but it's otherwise fully loaded. About the only thing it does not have is Leather and a moon roof.

Actually, if you don't need a super-loaded truck, you can get a NEW Ram Cummins for less than $46K.

I don't like leather (it's cold and cracks or a moon roof they leak when they get old and the rubber gasket gets hard and ozone rotted.

I don't need super loaded - nor do I want a Tradesman/ST. I'm upgrading from a 2003 Tundra so I want some nice things like blue tooth and Navigation. Could get exactly what I want in a Big Horn - as soon as I find one. Going to chat with a salesman on a new BH this afternoon. We'll see. Here is the 2013 I was looking at. Would most likely have to ensure the tires/wheels were as good as original.
