- RedRocket204ExplorerAny of the Chrysler insiders know if there are plans to hit International markets with this Ram 1500 diesel?
Seems like that is where they might get the potential for a big payoff. One possible negative would be the truck foot print (size) might be a bit big. - fly-boyExplorerThis is an ideal truck for a lot of the towing I do-
Perfect for a hauling the ski boat, Costco/Home Depot runs... I would even add a goose neck hitch which would make it perfect for towing a couple of horses to local ropings...
Whether you are a big Dodge fan or not everyone should applaud them offering us the option of diesel power in a 1/2 ton. - apr67ExplorerSince the actual manufacture of this engine (VM Motori) is 50% owned by Fiat and 50% owned by GM, I'm actually interested in this. The initial release is a bit weak for my purposes, but it has tons of development potential. It wouldn't take much of a tweak for it to make the power to be a heavy half ton truck, or a 5/8 ton truck.
- APTExplorerryanb-72, higher FE makes more sense for those of us that drive more than the average miles per year. I'm loving the 38mpg of my DD along with torque right where the engine lives, 1500-2500rpm. I'm driving a competitor's 4-cyl now and getting right at EPA city rating of 22mpg, missing my torque!

I have to say I have NEVER considered a Chrysler product. Guess I have been a Ford loyalist most of my life until my last purchase which was my first import. I am soon going to be in the market for a new 1/2 ton truck and cannot wait for the ecodiesel to be released! It will (I hope) be a perfect fit for me. My Family and I are in the car more than most with where we live in relation to.... well anything.
My current vehicle has been driven an average of 23,000 miles per year. If I continue with that average and purchased an Ecoboost getting approximately 18 mpg average (a friend of mine has one and that is what he is getting) then that is an annual cost of $4331.67 in fuel at todays prices.
Now using the same mileage with an Ecodiesel guessing it will get 26mpg as they have said it will be class leading fuel economy so I gave it 1mpg. That gives it an annual fuel cost of $3264.17 even with the more expensive diesel fuel. That's an annual savings of $1067.50.
I figured in the additional cost of the Ecodiesel over the Ecoboost to be $1750.00 as both are premium engines and both cost over and above the V8 alternative. Which means in less than two years the e
Ecodiesel is saving me money. I figure over a 5yr period it will save $3587.50. Averaged out that is an annual savings of $717.50. Sounds good to me, and the additional towing power over the current TV is a super bonus!!

Wow- really respectable numbers!
I could have missed it in the article- did it list a torque number?
Just looked it up- 420#'s of torque and 240 HP- I think my 2000 F-350 7.3L Powerstroke had similar power!
So did my 2002 cummins! Amazing technology these days! - itguy08Explorer

You dislike RAM/Chrysler/Fiat/Dodge/whatever. We get it. You are entitled to your biased opinion. I choose facts.
And the fact is the Ram is the least capable 1500 series truck in most measures. Towing, Payload, Power, Fuel Economy, etc. One V6 version beats in the fuel economy race but that's about it. Can't argue that as it's a fact Jack.Buy a Ford EcoBoost and be happy. Tell us, what do you drive now? What do you tow with it?
2010 Taurus SHO with 62k. "Tows" my butt around and occasionally my wife and dog. :) No truck yet - after the car is paid off in Jan a truck will soon to follow. Either an EB F150 with Max Tow or a F250/350 as we plan on an RV either next year or the following year and the one we like maxes out at 9k. - ib516Explorer II

Probably won't do much. The 8speed behind the Hemi still:
1. Gets worse fuel economy than the Ecoboost and GM while towing and not towing.Yup, by a whopping 0.5mpg.
It still beats it. And .5 MPG adds up over 100 or 150k. The Dodge boys have been saying how the 8 speed was going to be the end all of power and MPG and, whoops it doesn/t.2. Is beaten by the Ecoboost in performance both in towing and not towing. REALLY?
So it won 1, tied 1 and lost 1. Maxed out the Ram barely beat the Ecoboost that had plenty of headroom to spare....
Might I direct you here:
and here
Lowest payload and towing capacity. Even the Tundra outclasses the Ram. Yup, a Pretty Boy truck with no substance to back it up.I'd argue the exact opposite. They are the class leaders in trucks right now. Highest tow rating, GVWR, GCWR and torque in the 3500 diesels.
And once you get up there you need a CDL in many states so you'd be better off going with a beefier platform than a pickup. And it has Chrysler's "famous" quality which means it won't be long for this world.Highest hp/tq and towing in the 2014 gas 2500 & 3500s (6.4L Hemi). Air suspension added to the 2014 HDs.
Got me there.Only manufacturer to still offer a 6 speed standard transmission.
With a seriously de-rated engine. They also have the Power Wagon, which is by far the most capable factory built HD truck. Nothing like that from GM, though Ford has a "sort of similar" vehicle in the Raptor.
Uh, yeah whatever. The Raptor is the better all around truck. Basically a factory Baja truck vs a rock crawler it the Power Wagon. The current 1500s have the best interiors, industry first 8 speed automatic transmissions, innovative air suspension, and highest mpg in the 1500s (gas or diesel), they are the only light duty diesel on the market, the list goes on.
The lowest payload and towing in the 1500's an interior that is nice but not best. Added complexity of the 8 speed and wrapped up in the dubious quality Chrysler is known for.
Again same old junk and song and dance from Mopar guys. Close but no cigar and always excuses why...

I think the Ecoboost F150 is a great truck, said so many times. They did have that issue with the intercooler and condensation, but I think they have that resolved.

Sales stats prove that Ram is not class leading.
If sales numbers is what you choose to judge "class leading" by, which I was not. I was talking about features and numbers. But hey, buy what you like.
P.S. The Ram HD is the best selling diesel truck in Canada.
