Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi. 3:73 or 4:10?

I just posted what I'm planning to buy, but would like some real world opinions on what gearing you have and how you like it.
Right now, I'm looking for something to pull a 21" Ragen TH with a GVW of 12,500lbs, but could see myself in a 30-32' 5th wheel in the future.
It will also be used as a driver so mileage is a consideration.
I believe the tow ratings are around 12klbs for the 3:73 and 15k for the 4:10s.
Lets hear your experiences.
  • It looks like 4:10 is the choice, however checking autotrader and Dennisdillion Dodge, who has internet prices of $9500-12,000 off sticker only has 3:73s.
    I couldn't find any 4:10s for sale.
  • My Ford 6.0 with 3.73 has no problems with 19,000+ lbs GCWR. If you plan to go heavier in the future, the 4.10 gearing will help but with a cost in highway mileage. I would consider this ratio with a DRW, but don't see a need with my SRW which will run out of suspension before power (I already run 19.5" wheels).
  • Given a choice I'd go with the 4.10 if you plan to tow heavy/often but I don't think it will change your life either way. I have the 3.73 and follow others' towing experiences with the 4.10s. I only tow about 8500# and it's a dream so maybe I don't the right data to give an opinion.
  • There is generally less than 1 mpg difference between 3.73s and 4.10s.

I'd probably go with the 4.10s
  • Gain in mileage is minimal and having a toyhauler myself I went with the 4.10s on my 3/4 ton TV.
  • Since you may get a heavier trailer some day, go with the 4.10. It's not that much different from the 3.73 and I believe that trans will have a double OD so cruising unloaded wont be bad with the lower gearing.
Also, if you find you have more power than you need (ya right huh) with the 4.10 then a simple tire change can raise it a fair amount until you get the heavier TT.
