I test drove a 2015 F150 XLT with the max tow package. It was like driving a cadillac. Rode nice, virtually silent interior and the power was off the chain with the 3.5. The dealer let me hitch up my camper and it had all the power it needed to tow, but still doesn't inspire as much confidence as the HD Ram. Also, with Rams truck month and some negotiation as well as military discounts from both Ram and my bank, the Ram ended up being a couple thousand cheaper. That made it a no brainer for me to get the heavier truck. The 6.4 is perfect and I really had no interest in a diesel. I have an older ram with the Cummins i use on the farm, but there are several reason I didn't want another one.
My camper is not big. Its a 19ft toy hauler that my old truck struggled with if it was loaded up (7600lbs). Now I can load up the Toy, fill the fuel station, fill the fresh water to capacity and my wife can load as much junk as she needs and I have no worries about being overloaded.
The only caveat to the weight of my camper is what im assuming is aerodynamic drag. My dads Airstream is actually bigger and the weight is almost the same and it pulled behiad my old truck like nothing. I think the high profile of the toy hauler makes the truck work a lot harder.
Two things I don't like about the Ram. Rough roads can get annoying and the cruise control seems lazy. If I have the cruise set at 60mph with the camper hitched up, when I hit a grade it will drop to 55mph before it slips down a gear and pulls right back to 60. Not a huge deal, just annoying. I pretty certain some better quality tires will help sort the ride out but I'm not rrich so tires will have to wait until I get all the miles I can get out of OEM tires. I have also found relitivly cheap ($1200) setups to pull the coil springs and go full air ride if I want to. Might consider that in the future. I also think I do not have my 4 way hitch adjusted correctly for the new truck and that is making the ride worse that it should be.
I love the 6.4 and its a beast. Its also a lot less complex than the 3.5 so I think maintence and repair costs will be a lot less down the road. I keep my trucks for a long time so that a huge factor for me. My 2001 F150 (5.4) has 276,000 miles on it and my old diesel Ram has almost 600,000. So far i'm loving my new truck and hope I get a lot of use out of it.
