Ram 2500 Cummins Furel Mileage

In my ongoing effort to decide to trade my Hemi for the diesel first let me say this: THIS IS NOT ABOUT TOWING CAPACITY. This is about FUEL ECONOMY.

My 5.7L Hemi tows my 8000# trailer over anything without trouble or working hard. The diesel will do the same.

What I would very much appreciate from some of you out there that have the Cummins is to post the FUEL MILEAGE that appears on your vehicles Electronic Info Center. (Please NOT what you figure by filling up)

Please note the approx weight you usually haul and the percentage of time hauling vs non hauling.

Some facts and figures for my towing: For the past 19779.5 miles (14 months) I have used 2141.02 Gals of gasoline with an average fuel mileage of 9.32MPG. Now for me MOST of those miles are towing and in generally hilly or mountainous areas.

My average fuel price/gal over that time was $2.54. I spent $5440.19 for gas.

Now if the Cummins Diesel will reliably give me Just a 2MPG avg better, IE 11.32MPG Then I would have only purchased 1747.3 Gallons of fuel. Resulting in a savings of $1000.76 At present the prices for diesel are very close to or up to a dollar less than gasoline and that would have added to those savings since I figured this on the price for gasoline.

Now these figures come from my Fuel Buddy App which is not as accurate as the Electronic fuel mileage readout in the truck. So in reality my savings would be a bit lower since my mileage is actually higher than indicated here.

Even with the additional cost of DEF and the higher cost of oil changes I will still come out ahead because. The Cummins Diesel is rated to go 15K between oil Changes, almost twice the 8000 of my gas engine. My present oil changes cost me about $80-90 (I use Synthetic oil) The same oil changes at most Dodge Dealers I have been to will run $124 to $140.

So I welcome your comments on this but PLEASE lets not get into the relative merits of hauling for the diesel vs the gas...that is NOT part of this decision.

Thanks in advance to all who answer

  • Had a 2012 Ram 1500 Hemi 3.55 axle and towed a Hideout at about 6500 lbs. Got the 2014 Ram 2500 CTD CC and noticed about a 1 1/2 to 2 mpg improvement. I was actually a little disappointed at first, expecting more. However found myself traveling faster and rarely downshifting, exhaust brake is incredible, and traveling above 4000 ft altitude was much better. I did not like the Nascar sound of the Hemi at 4000 rpm, but Hemi is a good engine and to each his own. Oil changes for me are 6 months due to low use. We now have a fifth wheel (about 9000 lbs) and actually get better mileage with it over the travel trailer.

The Cummins oil change interval isn't 15k miles, it's the sooner of 15k miles, 500 hours or 6 months. In my case the trigger is the 6 month mark.

But take heart. If you use subscribe and save on Amazon, you can pick up Rotella T6 for about $18/gallon. Throw in the filter and a full synthetic oil change will run you about $65.
  • 2006 3/4 mega 4x4. On a 4000 plus mile trip from Tucson to Jasper NY in Alberta I got as high as 14 mpg towing a 7000 lb to always over 12 mpg. But I went slow - between 60 and 65 because we were traveling with a couple with a Tundra and similar sized trailer and they could barely make 100 miles between fill ups.

When not towing and driving between 65 and 70 I get 21 to 23.
  • I don't have the figures on what my 2013 Cummins has used in gallons since new but I can tell you that towing 20,000# (Fifth wheel with boat behind) I get about the same mileage as you have overall. Empty my readout ranges between 16-19 everyday driving. My wife gets worse mileage driving it than I do.

Here is a picture of my dash with 2,600 miles on a reset. Notice, this was after about a 2 hour trip at 75 MPH. Look at the MPG readout on the bottom left of the screen. That readout is for the 2 hour trip only.

I am not sure you really want to rely on the console fuel mileage. I think you find that most of us that do "hand calculations" find the console to be off by about 1 mpg or so.

I don't have the EPA stuff on my 2001, so doesn't matter too much, but seems since Ram went toe DEF, about the same a the 5.9's got, 11 to 12 towing, and about 20 at 65 or so.
