No, that is not the case. As mentioned already, the coils will fall out if the shocks are a little on the long side. All of my rock crawlers use the shocks as limiters. No problems there. If I was off-road racing and jumping, I'd look at some limiting straps, but for my low speed world, shocks do the job just fine.
