Now I need some education about GVWR. With the referenced 'modifications', if an Arctic Fox is, say 5000 wet, and the payload on the RAM is 4350, is there a way to be both safe and legal?
To get the payload up I would be fine going back down to Tradesman or SLT, but can't give up 4x4 or crew cab and don't think going gas is the best option (right? right?). What else can I do?
I'm surprised you posted in the tow vehicle forum as we have a excellent truck camper forum. Ask the mod/adm to move you over their as some one will have the same truck and truck camper your looking at.
Our one ton DRW trucks are one of the most popular trucks for LTL delivery....hotshot runs....commercial haulers......and local regional service haulers....and for carrying 4k-6k truck campers. As Cummins98 mentioned the Ram has those big 9750 RAWR that will be carrying all the load in the bed.
Just for example; these trucks may have a 3500 lb rear axle weight when empty which leaves around 6200 lbs for a payload in the bed. Working trucks carry this kind of weight legally/safely every day....52 weeks a year. Same with a RV.
GVWR or the truck payload sticker aren't used for any legal load limits.
