So for my purposes, a TC, it sounds like diesel isn't strictly necessary. But for more long term flexibility, and durability, and the ability to throw a trailer on the back along with the TC, or to switch to a good size 5th wheel in the future, I think diesel is the way to go. Shout if you disagree becase it costs $9000 more!
And it sounds like if i get the diesel, I can do absolutely fine with the 68RFE. I can do more with the AISIN but it may not be worth the $2800 upcharge? I'm struck by the immense towing capacity of this set up > 30,000 pounds.
I am pretty set on the DRW. I would prefer to drive SRW, but payload makes DRW no brainer. With a TC on top it should do fine in the snow. Without the TC I'll either pull off two wheels in the winter or air down or get... yikes... 6 snow tires and throw some weight in the back.
What other options MUST I get? I'm so confused. I can't even tell what I get when I move up from Tradesman to SLT to Longhorn to Laramie.
I have owned both 68rfe and AISIN. The 68 was fine but the AISIN is a much more solid trans. I compare it to other built trans in the past I have owned. The head West Coast Warranty Rep Stan Gozzi when asked about the AISIN "they don't break" !
Cummins, Dually AISIN 3.42's towing combined up to 26-28K you are golden, over that go to 4.10's. All from personal experience! 3.73's are not needed.
As far as trim level I will only go with the top end since I am in the position to have what I WANT. The Limited if great BUT the GAWD AWFUL grill and tailgate are a no go for me. The LongHorn is top cabin with the best quality leather of any pickup. The interior is very high quality and I can tow 8 or more hours and not feel fatigued at all.
Stitching or not on the seats and the two color choices in the LongHorn.
