Heresy, but what if I drop back down to a SRW? I would have to get a lite or smaller TC, but all the other driving I do (off road, snow) would be so much easier and simpler. It sounds like a full ton diesel SRW can still handle a nice TT or 5th wheel though obviously not as big. Those are in the future, anyway. The question is whether I can find a 4 season TC under the payload of a SRW. Payload per RAM of a full ton Cummins 4x4 with AISIN is 4380 and tow capacity of 17,210.
But with SRW I could take a TC in the snow with no problem, off road no problem... just would have to get a lighter TC. Are any Light TC under 4000 wet and also decent in cold weather? Or is that just impossible?
This is a complete generalization, but if you go for a model with no slide out and 10' or less you can get down under 4000lbs, but add a slide out and they get heavy.
If you're going to try to stay 100% within mfgs ratings, then you're in a dually.
If you're ok with exceeding the "payload" capacity of a srw, the rest of the truck will handle it with suspension mods and good tires.
It's not camper season up here, but I've seen a lot of big AF campers and other slide out models on all flavors of srw trucks, including old square body Fords from the 90s.
I've run my old 2500 Dodge with a heavy camper, loaded with 4 people and gear for weeks, cross country, to AK, miles of fire roads. It's done just fine.
