  • Best to let the storm pass. I5 is on and off closed and they are checking for chains.

I'd wait out the storm and buy chains at Schwab's in Oregon. No tax and if un-used, you can trade them for another set if you change tire size.
  • It would be silly to travel over mountain passes in the west without carrying chains.

  • I don't know still the same rules now since I have out Wa area for quite few years ago but there was areas with chain check stations and if don't have changes you don't pass -- PERIOD --.
  • Tripcheck will show you road conditions over the Siskiyous. Which is where you need to worry. Now, go to LesSchwab tire center and buy a set of chains. Next spring if you dont need them take them back for a full refund.
BTW this winter there is no way in heck would I leave home without chains.
  • I vote no.
I have literally pushed snow with my bumper and it wouldn't stop my Dodge. I did buy chains but after 13 years they are still sitting unused in my garage.

Yes, some places will allow you to return if unused.
  • Lots of the passes are at least requiring you to carry chains currently. I haven't put mine on this winter but we've had snow for the last six weeks or so where I live and I do carry them along with me. Cheap insurance, imo. Get yourself a recovery strap too if you don't have one.
