Ram 6.4 reviews

I have had to resort to contacting Ram dealers outside of my area to even get sales information. I really hope their service departments do not mirror their sales. It has has been much easier dealing with Ford and GM dealers which may be due to the the fact they have many dealerships selling the same brand which are competing among themselves - This results in better responsiveness to potential and current customers.

Bill Smith (Ram dealer in ID) is very responsive compared to any dealer I contacted west of the Cascades.

Correct. It's in Kellogg , but they offer a free shuttle service from the Spokane airport. The dealers in the Boise area actually seem to compete pretty well with Dave Smith on price, probably because they really have no viable alternative. You can definitely work a better deal on a Ram than a Ford or GM around here.

The elevation thing I believe may be a major issue here in comparing the 6.4 to the Cummins. Thanks to the OP for running these tests and posting them, but it would be awesome if someone would run a similar comparison at 5000' or better 7000' elevation.

I came from a diesel to my 6.4 Hemi and was worried about the elevation thing. I recently hauled my 8500# TT and a truck full of kids, bikes and firewood up over Mount Hood in Oregon and felt very little drop due to elevation. Granted, it's only about 4500 ft but is pretty quick/steep getting to the top. I ran through the scales and I think I was about 17,000# total.

Overall, I'm more impressed with this truck every time I tow with it. My last truck was an 06 Duramax which was great.

If I regularly towed over 10,000# I'd probably opt for a diesel but for med/leaning heavy towing the 6.4 is a great truck.

I'm new here, so let me start off by saying hi. I've had a Ram 2500 6.4L CC LB, with 4.10 gears since Dec '13. I use it to tow a 36' 9500 GVW Keystone Outback, I also live at about 5400 ft. So pretty much every time I tow it's above 5000 ft. The truck does a great job pulling the giant box behind it. There's plenty of power even with the thin air. Towing I can get anywhere from about 8mpg to 12mpg or so. Not towing is 14+.

I figured with my short city street drive to work & cold winters here I was better off with gas. I really like this truck, it rides good for a heavy duty truck, has almost 3k payload on it, 15,400lbs max towing & 22,400 GCWR. The diesel version would have only gained me about 2200lbs of max tow, but I would have lost payload with the heavier engine.

I personally think you can't go wrong with the 6.4 or the CTD, I guess it just depends on personal preference & how often you tow. The way I looked at it when I bought the truck, is the CTD was about $6500 more than the 6.4 & since it is the same engine used in the SRT8 & Hellcat Challengers just retuned, I could always spend some of my savings & buy a blower for it if I needed more power. :B

The only thing I would change if I was to do it over, is, I would have bought the Ram 3500 to pick up about 1k of payload.

I'm gonna take a hard look at the 6.4 when I sell my Tundra in a couple of years. Looks like a good combo. Tundra's paid for so it's gonna be a while.

How heavy is your trailer? I'm used to towing 6000-11,000 lbs starting at sea level and crossing a mountain pass and basing my observations on 90,000 miles traveling NW to SW and NW to Midwest.
