Ram 6.4L Hemi - interesting find

Yes, I know, I'm way too in love with my new truck. Bear with me... :)

As I was crawling under and over it tonight, I found something I haven't seen before under the hood. Two cooling fans. One driven by the engine and a pulley the traditional way, and an electric fan in front of that.

Don't see that very often hey?

Incidentally, the cooling stack is in this order front front (grill) to back (engine):
- PS fluid cooler
- A/C condenser
- Trans fluid cooler
- Engine coolant radiator

I've really been trying to keep loose track of how many new trucks I see on the road and there sure are a lot of new Rams out there. I'm anxious to see the monthly sales numbers in the coming months.

I'm also seeing quite a few new Silverados - mostly the Duramax. It seems like I'm not seeing many Fords. Of course, my sample size is limited to my area and statistically irrelevant but it's still interesting to watch.

Ib I haven't been around much lately so, belatedly, congrats on that beautiful new ride!

My birthday present to myself next month is going to be a Ram 2500 6.4L in white; I don't log on nearly as much these days but I'll post pics & details for sure.

Have a guy coming to (hopefully) buy my 2008 F250 this upcoming weekend. Life's too short to not have a monthly payment!

Congrats! And please do post details, I'd like to know more about it. Did you do a factory order? What gear ratio?
  • Ram is indeed shaking things up, but the 2 way fan has been around for years. The newer Rams are the best looking things out there now, and the quality has improved drastically. As a gasser guy for now, the 6.4 interests me and I enjoy reading the posts about them. Have fun with the new truck.

Is the electric fan in operation when the engine isn't under heavy load, and might that be a fuel economy measure?

OMG, it's Japanese electric cooling fan in an 'Italian-American'truck! :E :B

You forgot Mexican :B...and I found some other stickers under there that said "Made in Indonesia" :E

Not sure on it's purpose. I was thinking maybe to make the A/C colder when engine RPM is low like sitting at a light - but I'm just guessing. Come to think of it, maybe it comes on under WOT too. At high RPM in my video, when the trans shifts, it sounds like a fan was at high speed then slows/turns off when the trans shifts, and it doesn't match engine RPM.

Check it out - at around the 8:05 mark in the video.

I have to check my buddies 2014 1500 Hemi to see if his has the same fan.
  • I'm sending in my paperwork to buy the lifetime "Max Care" (or whatever the top of the line one is) within the next 24 hours. Things like this are exactly why :)

I use to do all kinds of things to vehicles. Now days I wouldn't even know where to start. And I get the feeling that even if I did know where to start I couldn't afford the things I'd need to fix what was wrong. Lots of moo-lah for parts and an equal amount for the guy fixing it.

  • Dude you have a new truck, all is well. It is a nice touch to prevent overheating. I had a GM dually that had a set up like that one time. The big 3 have really come up with some nice gas engines the last couple of years
  • IB. I think your truck is awesome! I love how Ram is rethinking things like this and really shaking up the pick up market.
