I know what you're saying, and I've towed enough to realize this is only a quick snapshot.
But it did get pretty good mpg with that load. I was expecting more like 7, not 10. I was also expecting 2500 - 3000 RPM, not 2100 RPM cruising. There was much more low end power than I was expecting. Acceleration needs high RPM (normal) and I expect hills and headwinds will be the same.
I'm very happy with how it performed.
