Would be interesting to compare the diameter of axle tubes and the thickness of the material that they are composed of as well
Or maybe even the frames those axles are mounted on?
Todays half tons have a higher strength frame with a greater yeild strength than 3/4 ton's of just a two decades ago so I would wager that they would have a stronger frame than 3/4 from 40 years ago as well. Unless the manufacturers started increasing towing and payload ratings of 3/4 tons will decreasing frame strength over the past four decades.
I believe the AAM 9.76 axles alone that GM used on the 1500's of that year had a gress GAWR of around 6-8,000 lbs. According the GM fleet website that gives you the specs of individual components, the spring capacity on the non max trailering package is 3,850 lbs and therefore the net GAWR for that truck is 3,800 lbs. The max trailering package uses the same AAM 9.76, but has a spring capacity of 4,150, has a net GAWR of 4,150 lbs. Apparently they are limited by spring capacity and can go higher with a suspension that can handle more.
