I bought a new '90 2500 LD 2wd 5.7 6 lug axle 7200 GVWR with the 9.5" semi floater long bed 4.10 gears. Towed doubles with it for 8 years. TB engine with a whoppin' 215 hp/300 torque. It had 235k miles and gave it to my 17 year old grand son who ran it up to 247k miles and sold to a 16 year old teen in his town. The last my GS heard of the old truck it had 310k miles and the 9.5" was the same....just gear oil changes.
The wifes '16 1500 7200 GVWR chevy crew cab 4wd short bed 5.3 engine 6 speed 3.42 gears has the 9.5" semi floater with 6 lug axles. I have no idea how/if the material specs between the two rear axle assy has changed over the years but I hope her 1500 rear axle will also be as reliable as the old 2500 LD was.
The only service I've done on the 2500 LD 9.5" axle is replacing axle seals. But I would say the axle shaft dia/bearings on the 2500 LD was huge compared to any semi float axle I've seen. Ran drag race cars in the late muscle car '60/'70 era so I've seen lots of busted/twisted axles.
I see one of the Dmax/drag race teams used the 9.5" axle in their std cab short bed drag truck. Tough axle.
