I'd go with those Bosch solenoid injectors any day over Bosch Piezo injectors. The Bosch solenoid injectors have been run in the 2012 2013 and 2014 Passat TDIs now for 3 years with folks having 100k miles on them, and the failure rate has been almost non existent. The Passat runs the CP4-1 and it too, at 1800 bars has had extremely low HPFP failure rates also. Two factors that I have seen on TDI club that stand out for Bosch CP4.X HPFP failures, in all the VW and Audi lines... running Shell diesel fuel and running Valero diesel fuel seems to be a common denominator for eaten alive Bosch HPFP's.
Personally, I've noticed the least amount of HPFP failures occurring on Conoco, Phillips 66, Sinclair and Unocal 76 brand diesel fuels. Very, very hard for me to find Bosch HPFP failures on this brand of diesel fuel west of the Rockies.
YMMV, these have been my observations in countless hours of research on TDI club, trying to find a commonality for the failures. Quality of lubrication in diesel fuels does vary. If you want a little piece of mind, don't hammer on the throttle on and off, roll your foot into and out of it gently on these HPFP's, trailing throttle fuel pressures on these is absolutely brutal load and pressure wise on these pumps, and always supplement your fuel with a pint of biodiesel per 12 gallons of fuel pumped into your fuel tank, at a minimum, a qt per 12 gallons would be better.
You advocate using a diesel additive with cetane or something like that in the ED? I'd used some in my old truck, but I kinda had the impression that the ED might be picky about that sort of thing.
Biodiesel is NOT diesel additive. It is fuel. Fuel extender to be exact. And as a fuel extender and/or substitute fuel, it also has a quality of adding back lubricity lost in refining diesel fuel to ULSD 15ppm of sulfur or less. History of diesel fuel from 5000ppm to 500 ppm sulfur(LSD) to 15ppm sulfur(ULSD)
I did not suggest that biodiesel was an additive. I simply asked a question. Why so touchy?
Anyone have thoughts on cetane for the ED? Additive folks all say that it's safe for DPF systems, lots of posts around the web re. folks being pretty hesitant to add a cetane additive, and the owner's manual explicitly tells you not to.
This Bosch system is so complex, so many sensors that measure everything, with so many injection fuel maps now that Bosch has gone 64 bit with their EDC-17, that the "brain" completely compensates for whatever your cetane rating is, tank by tank. I would, however, want to keep any residual moisture out of the fuel tank by running Power Service White bottle, at least once a month, and if you are in humid areas, I'd dose heavily come fall, to get all the moisture out of your tank, and to have it out of the tank before freezing temps show up and freeze moisture in your fuel filter, effectively blocking it. Diesel fuel is highly hygroscopic, it sucks moisture out of the air in an adiabatic cycle, daily.
I'd also lean on keeping my fuel tanks full for storage reasons, if extended storage is expected, less air in the tank to breathe moisture out of the air, and I'd make a habit of always keeping 1/4 tank of fuel in the truck. Bosch HPFP's use diesel fuel as coolant for the pump, the lower the fuel in your tank, the lower the level of coolant and the higher the fuel return recirculation rate, causing what little fuel left in the tank to get hotter and hotter. This fuel gets compressed at up to 30,000 psi, and compressing anything makes it heat up. So keep at least a 1/4 tank of diesel in there, and forget about how far you can go on a tank.
A general suggestion or rule of thumb for filling up. Your total purchase should not exceed 21 to 22 gallons, exception being in an extreme emergency. Especially when hauling heavy loads or trailering, where you are seeing 17 mpg or less while doing heavy work.
So the lubrication qualities that these cetane additives are supposed to add doesn't strike much of a chord with you?
Am not setting you up for something. I am always happy to learn from folks that know more than I.
I add a pint of soy based biodiesel every 12 gallons. Nothing else does it better, or more cost effectively. Or a quart every 20 -22 gallon fillup on the Touareg TDI, then fill 'er up. I try to buy 12 gallons of biodiesel at a time, and use an Arizona Iced Tea bottle for the quart additions, or a SOBE soft drink long neck bottle for the pint additions. A long neck bottle goes a long ways towards avoiding spilling the stuff before sticking the pump nozzle in.
I add fuel with super lubricating properties. Do a Google search on The Spicer report.
