OK so I feel I am stressing the truck to much in hilly conditions pulling my 5th wheel camper, seems fine out on open road but needs help near the lakes and camp grounds going up those sometimes large...
I had a 2003 F-150 5.4L 3.73. It seems to be happier at 28000rpm than 2500rpm. So in 3rd gear it would sing all day at 70mph/2900rpm. Therefore, I think 4.10 would be ideal. For 4WD it wasn't worth $1500 to change. If you can change to 4.56 for under $500, go for it. But I would say on a 15yr old truck, save the money for the next tow vehicle. Make sure it has at least 6 gears in the trans.
