I bought some 2" tall reflective stick-on letters/numbers and used them to put the truck tag number plus the two digit state abbreviation on the rear of the camper. I think any policeman worth his salt is going to know what that is. I actually did this as much for my benefit as theirs, because there are times that I needed to know what the tag number was as well.
I really don't like moving the plate from the truck to the camper due to the very real possibility that I will forget to move it back when I take the camper off the truck.
In over 25 years of hauling TC's that totally obscured the rear tag I've been stopped twice. I had the distinct impression both times that they were checking to see if there was reason to look inside the camper. Neither one did, and only one of them asked about where the plate was. I politely told him it was on the truck where my state said it should be.
That's the way I do it, YMMV.
