For what its worth, In our state NSW, the plate has to be visible from 45 degrees in any direction. So I have a vanity plate that replicate's the rego plate. It says camper plate on it next to the state.
So far the local LEO have said they were happy that I tried to make the best of a bad situation.
But as said above try and comply with your state regulations and you should be ok.
It would be nice if here in the States, they would make clear and succinct laws like that, but they leave things open to interpretation. Gotta keep the lawyers in business I guess.
