Recommendations for Next Camper, Please.

Last truck was 1984 F-150 w/302 V8 & longbed. I bought a Lance camper for it (8 ft, no toilet), which was a huge mistake. Way too heavy, truck grossly underpowered with it, substantial sway on corners, any hill of any consequence & the truck bogged down to around 35 mph. Sold the camper - kept the truck for around 15 years. Went back to tent camping.

Years have passed, & I've now gotten a 2015 Ram 2500 crew cab, 6.5 ft bed, with Cummins diesel. I'm looking for a non-pop-up, 8 to 8.5 ft camper without a toilet that's preferably in the 1200-1500 lb dry weight category, & with a dinette & usual kitchen, etc. For me, my sweetie, & our 150 lb Great Dane (ie, BigDog, who's all for going camping). Mainly for driving on surface streets & staying in campgrounds; we don't intend to go offroad, although we'd like to use it year-round (& the beaches in the NW in the winter can get cold & RAINY!!!).

Frankly, I haven't found much, with the exception of a Pastime 850SD (& various pop-ups, eg, Palomino, which I don't want). And I'd also prefer well-made over fancy & pricey.

Thank you for any suggestions???

Richard, in Seattle

  • Guess you could make up the dinette into a doggy bed and train him to sleep up there off the floor? Course, if he got up there it wouldn't be much of a leap to take over your bed. We dog people. There are three with us but all together they don't make one Dane!

That's a nice TC BUT the dog won't fit. Not enough floor space. Our 910 is large and our weim took up most of the real estate and he was smaller than a Dane. Gotta think of the dog's comfort and ease of stepping over it.

It'll be a production getting to the restroom in the middle of the night. Something to think about.

It looks to me like a sacrifice, but just of a different type. While we are at it, 1594 dry weight according to their site. 6 gallon Grey tank and 6 Gallon Black aren't giving much room for anything other than an overnight or full hookups. It seems strange that they made those so small.

True but it is a 4 season camper.. And the OP stated no bath, so a bath with 6 gallon tanks is a plus that you dont need to walk to the onsite bath at 2 am when you need to go...:E

There are many out there and as someone stated we dont know where the OP lives..

Here is EZ lite 1350 lbs no bath.. In CA..

I just saw a 2004 Travel-lite 890R for sale on Craigslist Buffalo. The TC was actually on Grand Island, NY. Looked good like mine.

Well he did say "NW" in his post so .....

In any case Lance used to make a non bath 8' camper that as around 1500# a couple of years ago. Don't know that they still do however. You can download all Lance brochures from 1993 onward. Easiest to just google the year you want and get the PDF. I would check about 2006.

In your area you may find one used pretty easily since that's a great area for TCs. Good luck with the search.

  • Lance 805 will fit your needs.

If you don't mind going slightly heavier, say 2,400# wet and loaded, you could move up to the Lance 815 though it does have a bathroom. However, you could always use the bathroom as an extra closet with the factory rod. Your truck would be a good match for the camper though over the GVWR but well under the GAWRs.

Capri may also make a no thrills camper that would suit you.
