It is kinda funny, I had an ‘83 Chevy 2WD crewcab dually and an ‘86 GMC 4WD crewcab dually, both carried my 11.5 footer with zero issues and zero modifications.
The 2WD ‘83 rode and drove as nice as the new ones and nearly felt like a car even when the camper was on.
There’s nothing revolutionary about the suspension under new pickups. A ladder frame, leaf springs and shocks. Same stuff we’ve always had. I think a lot of the extreme improvement is psychological.
That old-style Chevy sat a whole lot lower too. That in itself creates more stability than any taller truck can achieve no matter how much you stiffen it up.
