Refigerator tempts

Rv is parked in the sun without hookups.93 outside and fridge is 47. Is that the norm? Unit is older and is gas or 12 volt. It is currently on gas.
  • No it is not normal. To me it is saying it is not getting enough air circulation. Is this in a slide or does it have a roof vent?
  • Well there are a lot of variables that go into saying if it is right or not.

1- How cold were/are the items in there, already cold or warm?
2- How much is in the fridge (an empty fridge has more of a problem staying cool)?
3- How often is the fridge open and closed?
4 - What type of venting? A roof vent tends to cool better in still air. If no roof vent then you may want a fan.
5 - How old is the cooling unit?
6 - Does the fridge cool better in the same heat on 12V or 110? Could be the flame is low and needs cleaning.
  • Try using a small fan to blow into the outside vents to improve circulation through the cooling coils. If it helps, then consider adding fans designed for that purpose. With outside temps that high, there is just not as much cooling available. However, I do think that yours is higher than I would be comfortable with. Might be a good idea to brace your pocketbook. With ours parked at that temperature, especially with full sun on that side. we have seen out have to work hard to maintain inside temps in the low 40's.
  • Update. Tapped on the burner and the flame shot up from a pilot light to about an inch and a half. Tempt went down 5 degrees in 10 minutes. Another question, how do you clean the burner?
  • VERY carefully :B

Others may give you a better idea but I have some old tooth brushes to clean areas like that. When the burner is cold, brush the orifice and it will remove a lot of the growth around the pilot. You can get a wire that goes in the orifice as well, make sure that it is the correct size (propane). I have also used canned air BUT again when shut off!
  • Sounds like you have discovered at least part of the problem but the simple fact is that absorption fridges have always struggled when ambient temps are high. Especially if the fridge side isn't in the shade.

If you decide to replace your fridge you should give serious consideration to switching to a compressor fridge.
