refueling

Hi ALL,

I am still new to TT ownership and towing. We have had our set up for almost a year and haven't strayed to far from home. i haven't had to refuel yet.So here is my question or questions rather. Do truck stops have regular ol gas pumps for non diesels? I just don't want to get into a situation where i have to refuel at a smaller gas station and maneuver the trailer around. i'm still not efficient at backing up. any advice?
  • Whenever I travel, I usually look in advance at google maps satellite view to actually find and view the stations layout. I know how far I can drive on a tank making it easy to pick and choose my gas stops. I just keep my list of stations on hand.
Interstate roads are usually never a problem for gas stops. Most all are major corporate stations geared for easy on/off access.
  • We stop at Loves travel centers. Easy in and out.

But, you really need to hook up and just go practice backing. We prefer traveling the two lanes of the west, and have had to back out of the pumps at some smaller stations.

You really restrict your accessibility to some camp sites if you can't back in.

You can do it. Just practice.

    Happy camping.
  • A lot of Pilot/Flying J's have RV islands which are basically pull thru pumps that allow you to circle back where the trucks enter/exit to get out. Before we got the diesel truck we always stopped at the one in Moss Point MS on Hwy 63.

As you get more experience with maneuvering your rig, you'll soon notice that some gas stations are definitely the wrong places to stop for fuel.
  • Truck stops do sell gas. They usually have regular "car" gas pumps and a few for RVs. These are typically located in the front; not out back in the big truck diesel lanes. There's normally no gas back there.
As for "smaller" gas stations; keep in mind that pretty much all of them get their gas delivered in tractor-trailer tanker trucks. If an 18 wheeler can get in there to unload you should be able to get in too.
  • Most truck stops have easy access for rvs. You need to practice driving your rig. No one needs to be driving a BIG rig down the highway unless they know how to do it, and being able to back up is a requirement for safe driving. And your spouse should be able to do the same.
