The Ca registration fee is based on the value of the vehicle, that combined with ever increasing insurance costs is one reason I drive old cars!
The 'all pickup trucks are commercial' thing is ridiculous. I don't understand why it's like that, or why manufactures have not stepped up to lobby that rule away. With the number of trucks sold for personal use, it does not make any sense.
I think it's only ~$30/year extra for my little Nissan, but the fees go up quickly with weight class.
X2 on the old car approach. We own 3 vehicles here in CA, with the newest being 2005 ... but I do wonder when CA is going to flat-out force my 1995 4X4 pickup off the road with a mandatory buy-out program?
As for the upside, we have deer and turkey grazing around our orchard trees, do not have to ever winterize our RV and can use it year-round, and have property taxes in the basement due to Prop 13 ... and all of this just a few miles from Silicon Valley with it's outstanding medical services all paid for by Medicare and a medigap policy.
We do love to visit Nevada and Arizona in our RV, though. :)
