Regular or premium

I know that Chevy recommends premium gas in the 6.2L engine. What do all of you out there use? Is using regular a bad idea?
  • What a wonderful surprise for new truck buyers!! So, it's a given that Premium fuel runs about 40% more than Regular. That being the case, if a person drives only 15,000 miles per year, and is fortunate enough to achieve an average of 15 miles per gallon, his annual outlay is probably going to be about $800 more than a truck that burns Regular fuel.

To me, that's a lot of money for, really, nothing. But on the other hand, if a person is dropping 80 or 90 grand on a truck, I imagine an extra $800 per year is fairly insignificant.

The problem with comparing the GM Ecotec 6.2L with all those other engines is that the 6.2L has a compression ratio of 11.5:1 while all the others stated are 11.0:1 or lower. Compression ratio is what mainly dictates the need for premium. The higher the compression ratio, the greater the need for premium fuel.

    Hemi 5.7L- 10.5:1
    GM 5.3L- 9.6:1 for non-Ecotec (11.0:1 for 2014+ Ecotec)
    GM 6.0L- 9.7:1
    GM 8.1L- 9.1:1
    Ford 7.3L- 10.5:1

    Bingo^^^^

    Chevy 6.2 ---premium gas
  • Apples and oranges comparing the 6.2 with other engines. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

  • I've towed with (2) 5.3 Chevys (1) 5.7 Hemi and now a 7.3 Ford and all have had no issues with Regular 87.
  • Can't speak to the Chevy 6.2 engine, but use regular with our 8.1, 6.0, 5.7, and 5.3 GM engines without issues or pinging. Only vehicle that gets premium is my wife's Caddy, runs great on regular but it is her car and she wants her baby to have the best.
  • I have the 6.0L engine and use the cheapest gas; no ping.
  • There have been multiple 6.2L owners here stating that theirs would ping horribly with regular unleaded.
