I had lots of iron in my day and a lot of snap your neck engines.
62 Starfire with a 394 4bbl Ultra High Compression. I used to drag race the streets of Penticton and lost very few chews with Camaros firebirds and the like. Amazing power out of that greasy old oil leaking pig.
Had a couple 454 4 gears too. I used to bust stuff with them. Redline it and sidestep the clutch - Yahoo baby lets go!! But I had to beef up everything. Got tired of breaking diffs so I put a Detroit locker in it. Had to have a racing clutch too after ripping out too many OEM ones. Knocked a couple trannies out too.
Good buddy of mine had a 68 Coronet RT with a dual quad hemi 4 gear. Now there was a car. We beat everything on the road with that baby. Too bad he could never keep a motor in it though. It was notorious for running out of oil at 5 or 6 grand and spinning bearings. Expensive thing. I lost track of how many times I yanked the motor out for him and tore it down.
Fast forward to today.
Same guy has a 2006 300 series SRT8 with the 6.1 hemi.
I have to say that it has more oomph that his old hemi car did. Scary fast. Unbelievable fast. I've beat on it... Oops I mean driven it a few times and it is just wild. 0 to 100 before you can burp. Turn the trac control off and you can't keep the rubber glued down, it's all over the road.
And the cool thing is it has about 380,000 K on it (236,000 miles) of seriously hard driving and it just keeps going. Never broken it, never knocked a crank out or anything. Tranny is getting a little funny but what a great car! And if he keeps his foot out of it he can pull 30 MPG out of it. (Documented) not the lie-O-meter. He has done many top end runs with it on a chosen stretch of open highway when nobody is there. 169MPH. Can't quite break 170.... Fastest I ever saw in the old Coronet was about 155. Dropped a driveshaft once at 150. I was in the middle of the back seat and it whacked me in the butt! Ouch I had a sore *** for a week!
My LBZ Dmax is pretty amazing for power too but I don't like the turbo lag while it decides what to do when I pound on it. Never thought I'd have a diesel with that kind of torque and ponies. Great truck!
So yeah there are a lot of great powerhouses in today's rides. But all that computer junk really holds back what could be a serious contender at the track.
