Those infamous "SLIP-O-MATIC" GM transmisisons of the 50s sure didn't win many street races... Had to build up the fluid pressure first then slowly engage the GO mode.. Engines screaming like heck and not moving at all...
FWIW, can't say technology changed a whole lot in the 60's. Back in the day, I was in a pinch and found myself in a bare bones, full-sized, '66 Chevy, 4-door, Biscayne. Probably weighed 4000-5000 lbs. and exhibited massive body-lean in turns. It had a single-barrel, 230 straight 6, with a 2-speed automatic, non-power all drum brakes, and manual, brute-force steering.
It had two all-out modes of operation---pedal to the metal, hoping it would keep up with traffic---or, two feet on the brake---prayin' it would stop. Additional note: You always kept both hands on the steering wheel!
