Removing original butyl caulking?

I sealed up two outside camper doors using Proflex. However the original caulking was a lot harder to remove than I thought it would be. The cauking pulled up the stickers off the side of the camper. Came up in pieces.

Is there a better trick for removing original butyl caulk? Thanks!
  • Okay, I tried a little Naptha but didn't let it set very long.

I ended up using my white Proflex to cover the area that the decals ripped up, they were quite noticable.

I'll let it set a little longer. Thanks!
  • I remove the majority of the old caulking with a plastic putty knife and then use mineral spirits. Wipe on the mineral spirits, let it set for a little while, 2 or 3 minutes, then wipe off.

You have to repeat a few times to get it all, but I haven't damaged anything that I've done.

I have had decals come loose at the edges. If they are in a caulked seam, I push them down and caulk over it.

If they aren't at a seam that will get caulked, I apply a couple of coats of acrylic finish on them. (ZEP floor finish)
  • I believe I have heard of folks using just regular cooking oil soaked in a rag.

    And also, mineral spirits
