Money is typically a driving factor in getting updates done and from the sounds of things there's not much available.
Obviously you have never been through a forum update before. It's not pretty.
If you modify so much as an accent color, the "I DON'T LIKE CHANGE" horde attacks with prejudice.
I also participate in a farm tractor forum where they still have their old-fashioned, text-based bulletin board just to keep the "I DON'T LIKE CHANGE" crowd happy. They tried a modern forum system and it was vehemently rejected with threats of violence. As a compromise, they came up with a way to mirror the posts from the old system to the new system and back.
Yes, I have been through a forum update before. Not this one. But I have admin'd/moderated other forum software for other people/clubs.
In my case, I hosted it all for free and the club (until recently) didn't pay a dime for my time. When there was change I would post what it was, when it would be, asking for input etc etc. There are several types of people on forums like these: The ones you just described (I don't like change, why are you doing this, I hate you/my life) and the ones who just don't care enough or have time enough to voice their opinion. There is a third "party" that's in the middle and they do try to support and help everyone, but they're in short supply imho.
I am not referring to this forum, I haven't been here all that long to discern the types of people.
But yep, I have been around enough on the Internet to know the various types of people. And in some cases - given the number of people who may not be "technical" it might make sense not to change.
