Replace skylight with vent?

Greetings, we took our first trip in our "new" 2000 Arctic Fox 1150 truck camper this weekend. One of the things that I really liked about our old camper was the large escape hatch over the bed. We would open it often to cool off at night.

This camper does not have the large vent above the bed, but it does have a skylight. The opening appears to be 14" x 22". I searched the forums and the inter webs and could not find a vent that fits that opening. I certainly could make an insert that would fill the opening and mount a 14 x14 vent, but I would prefer an off-the-shelf solution.

Can someone point me to a vent or even a powered vent option? Thanks.

P.S. The dimensions may be slightly off. I saw that one dimension looked the same as my vent, and found that 14x22 was a common skylight size.

  • You could enlarge it and put in a Heki Midi vent/skylight. Cutout is 27.5 x 19.5.

You could, but I wouldn't: even though it seems to be a "premium" option on some campers, the concept (while nicely conceived) is poorly executed and somewhat fragile. But it would accomplish what you want, and with careful handling it will last awhile.
  • I posted this same topic awhile ago and couldn't find any answers either as I am looking to do the same thing with my 1150. Please keep me/us posted on anything that you find it would be appreciated.
  • many marine style hatches have locks and screens and inside trim, but can be about 500 bills. I like opening hatch too for venting, and in my case escape.

Is there any possibility that an actual escape vent would fit that opening? If not the marine port or vent idea might work. Seems it would work better to enlarge the opening a bit to accommodate a vent than close off the old excess space. Just hate messing with the roof!

I hadn't thought of enlarging it. I am taking it in next spring to have maintenance done on the roof so that might be the right time for something like this.

How about a hatch made for boats? I think they come in different sizes...

That's not a bad suggestion. It seems weird that I'm the only one who would rather have a vent than a skylight.
