We ordered a 4" thick queen memory foam mattress from Walmart and cut it in 2 with a serrated bread knife. Worked out really well and is much more comfortable that the foam rubber pads.
Serrated knife is ok, but try an electric knife! Goes through like butter. - Community AlumniYou could get a 4" or so twin mattress topper for fairly cheap from eBay. Then just cut it to the shape that you need. I'd say anything 4" would be a comfortable mattress for most. The thicker the better.

- michigansandzilExplorerI used an egg crate mattress.

- ksg5000ExplorerPurchase a large memory foam mattress from overstock.com - easy to cut down into two bunk sized mattresses.
- Opie431ExplorerWe got ours at JoAnn Fabrics. I did not replace the mattress altho I could have
as they had lots of sizes. I bought somthing the right size and three inches thick to fit under the mattress we had. Now we have a seven inch mattress on the bunk. It would not have worked if the mattress had been in bad shape.
You buy the foam, not a covered mattress. - zackyboy3rsExplorerThanks all.
- westendExplorerI'd suggest to go to an upholstery supplier in your area and buy new high density foam. If you want to get on the memory foam bandwagon, you can purchase that separately and glue it to the foam.
FWIW, I was able to get my BIL to replace the foam and cloth for all my cushions and mattresses. They are as comfortable as any mattress I could have bought. I used this 4" high density foam but if you look through the catalog, you'll see that there are many different types and sizes.
Good luck with the mattresses. - fallsriderExplorer
